[AW] Damhsa na gcailleach - Saorlaith - 12/6/2025

skill: seer (1/5) - aligned with the full moon.
There was some sort of balance at play. Her parents felt it, her sister felt it, she wondered as she looked at him in his little nest-made Altar, did Faolán feel it?

The days of her mother and brother's absence had scalded her. She had thought the world full of promise and something close to perfection. Without her mother and brother, then how could things be perfect? Saorlaith had struggled to find some shred of normalcy and her hiccuped little sobs at having to try and sleep without them - no amount of snuggling into Lestan or Eilidh had been enough. As if in some sort of protest of her emotional state, her little zips hovered just on the fringes of the den like little fireflies, but eventually they could not distract her at all. Eventually she stopped noticing them.

But when her mother and brother had returned to them it had seemed so strange to see all of her zips hovering over Faolan. Everyone worried over him, and there was yelling that had awoken her, but she could not remember all of it. It was too much to see the state of her mother and brother, to see their fragile and delicate bodies. She had never thought of either as fragile, let alone mortal, and her thoughts spiraled. And it felt wrong, the tension and dread that mixed with the acrid fear she could taste in the air.

It was not the same thing as the blood moon that they had all fed their worries to. For Saorlaith she had snuck out into a clearing and established her own wards. Her breath was quick in the cool of the night as she thought desperately of what she might offer the moon. What is...what is enough? It was a near desperately offered question and the silence of the night gave her no hints. A whisper, so soft in the back of her mind, told her she knew. What if she....what if she promised to listen? What if she promised with her entire heart Ansin is féidir leat mé a bheith agat. Le do thoil, le do thoil! Beannaigh é. Sábháil é! To beg, to plead with all she was - Saorlaith lifted her voice higher.

Faolan and Kirain both still needed to be made whole. And if Saorlaith could help that somehow, what better thing could she do?

RE: [AW] Damhsa na gcailleach - Kirain - 12/9/2025

Life had been such a blur since she’d returned with her son. The frantic efforts of the pack to save him, the careful tending he required to heal, the strain it placed on her family, Kirain felt every bit of it. Guilt built in her chest day by day, heavy and aching, shame blooming for having failed those she loved. And while everyone assured her otherwise, she knew her mate and daughters were going without the love and attention they deserved. It was all Faolán, Faolán, Faolán. Even if no one minded, the thought still made her heart twist.

At Lestan’s urging, she finally stepped out of the den, leaving behind the immediate stress of hovering over their son. Her body was still healing, her pace slow, her limp pronounced, but she pressed on. She had no particular destination in mind until her daughter’s raised voice cut through the evening air. Ears pricking with concern, Kirain made her way toward the clearing Saorlaith had claimed.

She paused on the outskirts, watching for a moment. Pride stirred in her chest at the sight of her daughter speaking so boldly to the spirits.

Quietly, she moved forward and settled beside her.

Hello, my love, she murmured, warm and motherly, offering a soft smile. Leaning in, she placed a gentle kiss atop Saorlaith’s head. And what exactly are we yelling about tonight, hm?

Her tone carried a teasing lilt, though the curiosity was genuine.

skill: seer (2/5)

She was unaware of being approached, of the quiet steps of her mother, which still hurt her. She was unaware of Kirian's worries, either, that the girls were struggling and feeling neglected. Saorlaith felt unmoored, something deep had shifted once her happy little family image was shattered. Her zips, her little connection to the spirits she didn't yet understand, they had never left her before. She felt an anxious tremble run the length of her spine, running all the way down her legs and even her tail, the tip twitching sharply behind her. The things that she had always known were now not known at all.

She did not understand the little dance of lights that seemed to hover near her were spirits. She did not have the perception or experience to know that those little whispers that occasionally tickled in the back of her mind came from somewhere. And those whispers wanted her closer. Closer to where, she did not know. But she would hear them beg and plead 'come with us, child!' but she knew somehow that where they wanted her to follow she could not go. Not yet.

But she could almost see the veil as it shimmered between the world of the living and the dead. She could take a step closer, she could listen to them like a good girl, if it meant that her brother and mother would be okay. She took a gulp of a swallow, startling when Kirian spoke to her. Immediately, the girl nuzzled into the soft pale of Kirian's coat. Mama, Saorlaith started, blue eyes closing in a little surrender. She didn't want to see the look on her mother's face yet. I....I thought if I offered then.....then Faolan could be okay. You could be okay. The little girl said softly. Even though she did not understand everything of the world she lived in and the world she felt nearby, the feeling of how wrong it was to even suggest such a thing.

She had yet to understand the gravity of the bartering, she did not know that even stepping a foot closer to the spirit would not necessarily lift her brother up. The spirits would not be honest in such a barter either.

The words of her child tugged at her heart desperately. She truly had failed her children, look at how they suffered.

Oh, Saorlaith… Kirain murmured softly. That isn’t your place, my love. That isn’t yours to bear. Her voice trembled despite her efforts. Your brother and I are going to be okay. The spirits watch over us. Please don’t fret your sweet little mind about it.

Reaching out, she pulled her daughter into a tight embrace, holding her close as if she could shield her from every hurt the world had to offer.

I’m so sorry we haven’t had much time together, she whispered. You have not been forgotten. You are not loved any less. Your father and I adore you, please don’t ever forget or doubt that.

Her tone was tender, overflowing with affection. After a moment, she drew back just enough to look at her daughter, worry etched into her silver eyes.

What can I do to soothe your mind, my love? The question was genuine, born from helplessness more than certainty.

Kirain felt utterly lost. She didn’t know how to do right by any of her children. Faolán lay so low, suffering, healing. Eilidh was anxious, developing strange habits that had not escaped her parents’ notice. And now Saorlaith was offering herself as some kind of sacrifice. A bargain. For the sake of her family.

It was too much.

Shame burned bright and painful in her chest. They deserved better than this.
